The Machame Lutheran Hospital Care and Treatment Center began operations in 2003. It provides counseling, testing, and treatment related to HIV-AIDS.   Currently there are more than 800 HIV+ clients of which more than 100 are children.  Anti-retroviral therapy is supplied and CD4 counts monitored along with overall medical care. Special emphasis is placed on TB as a often closely related disease.

The Care and Treatment Center is located adjacent to, but not in the hospital itself since 2008.

In addition to medical care, other support is provided. This begins with “expert patients” trained as counselors and extends through a variety of education programs giving the clients the information they need to live successfully and safely with HIV-AIDS. Support groups are another important component in helping clients accept and deal with their condition.
