To help in addressing the severe shortage of nurses in Tanzania, the Machame Hospital School of Nursing has been created. After much planning and effort 38 women and 6 men began attending classes late February in this three year Ministry of Health approved school.
This is a wonderful project in that so many youths are looking for opportunity, the jobs are there for them after they graduate, and at a good level of pay.
This school has begun partly on faith, because although it will be self sufficient in running costs, it will require outside help to build the additional classrooms and dormitories that will be needed as class two and three arrive in future years. We believe and pray that our friends will see the importance of this school and assist us in this effort.
RN Jim Simon returned to Machame Lutheran Hospital for 2 weeks in February 2010. Jim was with us in 2002 and 2004 as the relationship with Alegent Health in Nebraska USA was beginning. During the ensuing years he has been very active in supporting Machame Hospital, especially in the sourcing of equipment and supplies to equip the growing orthopedic program. Jim spent his time learning, assisting, teaching, organizing, and also the thing he does best: connecting. On his final day he told the staff “In America we have the technology – but I have learned here the importance of making space for God in our operating rooms”. Thank you Jim! Karibu tena!
